Sougata Ray's picture

I am a Professor in the Strategic Management Group of the Institute. I have specialization in strategic management, international business, innovation and entrepreneurship. I have been serving as President and Chairman of the Governing Board of Parivaar Educational Society, an NGO founded by Vinayak Lohani an alumnus of IIMC since its inception in 2004. Recently, I served as the Dean (Programme Initiatives) of the Institute. Earlier, I spent two years on sabbatical in Infosys Technologies Limited to spearhead the innovation initiatives and incubate the innovation services practice as General Manager and Head of Innovation Labs. I blend over two and half decades of experiences in diverse roles – a frontline executive in a Maharatna State Owned Enterprise, in a strategic role in an emerging market MNC at a senior management level, a researcher, visiting scholar, teacher and institution builder in some of the finest institutions in India and abroad, corporate advisor to a number of companies, family business groups and technology start-ups in India and abroad, an independent director in the Boards of Indian Oil and Tata Group Companies, and the member or Chairman of the Audit Committees thereof and as Principal Consultant to leading International Development Agencies such as DANIDA, UNFPA, and UNICEF. I conducted scores of executive education programmes and workshops for companies in India as well as in Colombo, Copenhagen, Dhaka, Dubai, Helsinki, Johannesburg, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. I regularly deliver talks in meetings organized by industry bodies such as Confederation of Indian Industry, American Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Software Services Companies, Society of Human Resource Management, TiE, etc. I have been serving as a member of various committees of Government of India such as MoU Task Force for CPSEs. I independently and jointly led nearly two dozen senior level executive delegations to multiple countries in every continent for high level meetings with the Ministries, Chambers of Commerce, Industrial Organizations, Research Labs and Academic Institutions. I take keen interest in understanding strategic behavior of emerging economy firms and have been researching extensively on how policy induced changes in institutional environment influence strategic behaviour of developing economy firms and how differences in quasi institutional environment, heterogeneity of firm characteristics and strategic intent of the top management lead to variations in strategy for growth, internationalization, innovations, entrepreneurship and sustainability of firms and family business groups. Of late I have developed interest in coprorate sustainability and BOP strategy and practices of firms and have been exploring how firms can actively participate in sustainable development working closely with the NGOs, development agencies, government bodies and institutions. I have written over 100 research papers, case studies and monographs and published in leading journals such as Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Global Strategy Journal, Management International Review, International Journal of Management, and presented papers in many international conferences including Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and Strategic Management Society Annual Meetings and special conferences. I strive to contribute meaningfully as a teacher, a researcher, an institution builder and a consultant. I immensely enjoy the multiple roles and responsibilities of an academician. Once a sportsman I have keen interest in sports and games. I have authored a few short stories in Bengali. I reside in the IIMC campus at Joka with my wife Alpana and two sons Anikait and Siddhartha. After obtaining her Ph.D. in Environmental Geography from Calcutta University Alpana has been working as an Assistant Professor in a college in Kolkata.

Research Interests:

I have been researching for two decades on how policy-induced changes in institutional environment influence strategic behaviour of emerging economy firms and how differences in quasi-institutional environment, heterogeneity of firm characteristics and strategic intent of the top management lead to variations in strategy for growth, internationalization, innovations, entrepreneurship and sustainability of firms, family business groups and state-owned enterprises. Of late, I have been researching on the areas of social entrepreneurship, corporate sustainability and BOP strategies and practices and exploring how firms can actively engage with social enterprises and non-firm actors to directly contribute to sustainable development.
